DBZ will forever hold a special place in my heart. I will always fucking love this cartoon. The first time I started taking drawing seriously was when I tried to re-create DBZ pictures. What little boy didn't?
Dragon Ball Z never really focused on character development. Nor did Dragon Ball for that matter. Sure, they transformed and got stronger, but you never really got to see the characters interact like people. DBZ is in no way a perfect story and in fact, it falls short a lot. Even the continuity is questionable at times. But somehow I still found a way to fall absolutely fall in love with the characters. And that's what worked for DBZ. It was the pursuit of power and unadulterated good triumphing over utter evil.
So I decided to do Goku and Gohan in a more "father/son" environment. Not as grand and special as my original idea, but I'm semi-okay with it.
Thank you Akira Toriyama. I wish I could create something as amazing and timeless like you. I'm a DBZ nerd and I'm completely fine with it.
I was the same way when I was younger. *Goes off on story tangent?* My brother was really big into DBZ when he was in middle school/high school and I think it had a lot to do with us living in Japan awhile back. He collected DBZ cards (and had a TON of them) and I collected Sailor Moon merchandise. Once we got to the states, I sort of dribbled into DBZ stuff and eventually became a bigger fan than he was. I loved drawing the characters. Toriyama and Takeuchi sort of became my base for drawing anime.
Needless to say! I agree. I'm a big fan of DBZ as well, despite all of the flaws or whatever. I'm probably one of the few people actually half-stoked to see the movie JUST because it's dragonball related, you know?
ANYWAY. Onto the work.
There's a really nice air about this, about their expressions and postures - it sort of speaks this language that gets across their fatherly-son bond, which is a big part of the story, I think (because you really get to see Gohan grow; speaking of character development, it might not be much, but I think Gohan goes through a LOT of it - mentally and physically).
Thanks! The movie looks like a complete disaster, but I'm still going to go see it anyway. And god knows you will too. Maybe Amaya, Liz, you and I can go see it. It'll be an adventure. Oh man it looks bad.......
Thanks for faving it too! I'm okay with their expressions, but they seem kinda blank. It's probably cause I messed up when I was inking. (Ack, the truth is out!)
Gohan does do a lot of growing up, but it seemed like he would be the focus of Z at the start. All the characters kept talking about how powerful he would become. But then it did the whole SSJ3 shit and everything got all fucked up. But I still love it.

This newsletter was "born" back in March 2007, from a conversation between ~Lareth and =FrozenStarRo, who with the help of their friends *Iardacil and =Sylwiaa , wanted to make something to promote known and unknown photomanipulators alike here on DeviantArt. As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same. As of recent, the talented =Behana has joined us in bringing you this weekly newsletter and we are excited to have her on board. This is a special feature, with a selection of 50 manips from the past year that we loved.
